Apple is now replacing batteries for iPhone 6s users whose phones may unexpectedly shut down. The issue occurs when the device might still reflect enough charge like 40 or 50 per cent, but it shuts down without warning. It only comes back to life when put on charging again. The iPhone 6s battery replacement program comes soon after Apple announced one for iPhone 6 Plus users. In iPhone 6 Plus, the issue was with the touch display, which would stop responding.
With the iPhone 6s, Apple was quick to point out this is not a safety issue and only affecting a small number of devices. According to the company, “a limited serial number range that were manufactured between September and October 201,” are impacted by this faulty battery.
Apple is advising customers who might have experienced this issue to visit an Apple Retail Store or authorised service centres with their device’s serial number to confirm eligibility. Unlike the iPhone 6 Plus ‘Touch disease’ issue where Apple is charging $149, the battery replacement process is totally free of cost.
Apple will examine if the device is eligible for the program and in working order before replacing the battery. With this exercise, Apple also recommends users back up their data to iTunes or iCloud, turn off Find my iPhone and delete all data on the device before handing it over for repair. In order to do so, go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings and make sure you are connected to the internet before you hit erase all.
Apple says if your device has any other damage like a cracked display, they will charge extra to fix this. The company says broken displays affect replacement of the battery and the issue will need to be resolved. If anyone paid to have an iPhone 6s battery replaced for a similar issue, then they can contact Apple for a refund.
Apple says this program covers affected iPhone 6s batteries for 3 years after the first retail sale of the unit. The advantage is that if the issue shows up on your device a little later, you could still be able to get the battery replaced.
