When somebody cracks a joke, it not only makes you laugh but also goes deep inside to boosts heart health and break the stress. Laughter is infectious. The roaring laughter is far more contagious than cough, sniffle, or sneeze. When laughter is shared, it binds people together and increases happiness. Laughter also triggers healthy physical changes in the body. Humor and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress. Best of all, this priceless medicine is free, and easy to use. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humor lightens our burdens, inspires hopes, connects us to others, and keeps us focused, and alert.

A study from Maryland School of Medicine proved that laughter is associated with healthy blood vessel function. Volunteers in this study were shown funny and disturbing movies to test the effect of emotional behaviors on blood vessel contraction and relaxation Researcher found that laughter causes the relaxation of endothelium of blood vessels to expand in order to increase blood flow, while stress contracts blood vessels and reduces blood flow. The principle investigator Michael Miller MD said that laughter promotes a healthy endothelium and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attack and stroke. It masks the impact of mental stress which is very harmful to endothelial function. When we laugh, the blood flow increases and the blood pressure rises; but when you stop laughing, blood pressure drops back to its baseline. This relaxing effect helps bring down blood pressure. Laughter generates deeper breathing, which in turn sends more oxygenated blood through the body. Laughter reduces the production of stress hormones in brain. Significant reductions can be observed in minutes and last for days.

In addition to healthy diet, healthy habits and exercise; learn to laugh. An essential ingredient for developing your sense of humor is to learn to not take yourself too seriously and laugh at your own mistakes and foibles. Choose to laugh whenever you can. Watch a funny movie or TV show, seek out funny people, read funny pages. Laughter takes you to a higher place where you can view the world from a more relaxed, positive, and joyful perspective.
