New Delhi: Ajinkya Rahane on Saturday became India's 33rd Test captain after Virat Kohli failed to gain full match fitness and was ruled out of the fourth and deciding Test against Australia in Dharamsala.

Rahane, 28, has been the vice-captain of the Indian Test team for some time, but never got the chance to lead the national side in the traditional format of the game.

And before today, he has never captained a side in first-class cricket.

He thus joined an illustrious list of Mumbai cricketers like Polly Umrigar, Nari Contractor, GS Ramchand, Ajit Wadekar, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ravi Shastri and Sachin Tendulkar to captain India in Test cricket.

This is his 37th Test match for Rahane. He made Test debut in March 2013 against the same opponents at Delhi.

Kohli picked up a shoulder injury while stopping a boundary on Day 1 of Ranchi Test. The skipper has missed a Test after 54 matches.
