New Delhi: As predicted by weather experts, most of the cities across India have begun to witness high temperatures – equal to peak summer levels - starting this week.
Such high heat during this time of the year could signal the country is in for a long, blistering summer. When summer is too hot for too long there are health risks. Therefore, it is necessary for the people to create preparedness systems to counter the health risks of heatwaves, which have become more frequent, intense and dangerous due to climate change.
If a heatwave hits this summer, make sure that you and your loved ones aren't harmed by the hot weather. Here are a few tips to stay healthy in the heat:
Drink plenty of water even if you do not feel thirsty.
Eat fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, cucumber, lettuce, celery and radishes, which are all made up of over 95% water.
See that food that needs refrigeration is properly stored.
Avoid excess alcohol and caffeine as they can lead to dehydration.
Wear light coloured, loose fitting clothes, preferably made from cotton.
Apply sunscreen and wear a hat if you must go outside.
Always carry a water bottle with you if you go outside.
Plan your day around the heat – avoid going out between 11am and 3pm (the hottest part of the day.
Take cool showers and baths.
Keep your house cool by closing windows, doors and shutting curtains when it is hotter outside.
Try minimising physical activity during day time when it is hot.
Follow your doctor's advice if you have any medical conditions.
Keep a track on the weather forecast.
Besides, don't forget to check on your friends, relatives and others who may be less able to take care of themselves.
Heatwave can affect anyone, but babies and young children, older adults (over 75) and people with serious chronic conditions, including heart or breathing problems, are at high risk.
