Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Jio has taken the telecom sector by surprise by announcing the launch of a 4G-enabled feature phone priced at "effective" zero that bundles life-long free voice calls with dirt cheap data in a bid to woo 50 crore low-income users.

It has been learnt that Jio now wants to provide free Wi-Fi to three crore college students across the country.

As per a report in the Hindustan Times, Jio has submitted a proposal in this regard to the human resource development (HRD) ministry.

Reliance Jio had last month made a presentation before the HRD ministry and expressed a desire to connect close to 38,000 colleges (technical and non-technical) across India by deploying free Wi-Fi connectivity, HT said.

“Though they (Reliance) are not charging us any money for this project, we can’t approve it without giving a fair chance to others. A tender will be floated so that it is a fair and transparent process,” HT quoting a source said.
