Kuwait underlines importance of UN Convention on maritime Law

Posted on : Wednesday 6th of December 2017

NEW YORK  (KUNA) -- Kuwait stressed the importance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which has become the legal core of international agreements and instruments.

This came during the speech of the Permanent Delegation of Kuwait to the UN delivered by the Second Secretary Mohammad Al-Ajmi to the UN General Assembly in its 72nd session while discussing maritime article and law of sea late on Tuesday.

Al-Ajmi called on non-member states to join the conference for their prominent role in achieving the goals of sustainable development in addition to their contribution to the enhancement of international peace and security.

The maritime sector is the main engine of countries economic growth as marine ships used to transport more than 80 percent of world trade.

Therefore, the return of criminal activities, including piracy and armed robbery against ships, poses a real threat to international trade and a threat to maritime navigation, where lives of those working on these ships are endangered, Al-Ajmi noted.

Al-Ajmi expressed Kuwait's condemnation of all acts of piracy, hijacking of commercial vessels and terrorism taking place in the oceans.

Kuwait also welcomes the efforts exerted to face challenges, which cannot be overcome without concerted efforts of the international community through the effective application of the provisions of international law and the law of the sea, he said.

He also stressed Kuwait's full commitment to the 2012 Security Council resolution, which calls on all countries to criminalize piracy in their domestic laws.

Al-Ajmi called on all members to cooperate and make joint efforts to benefit from marine resources, by using technology and abiding all legal instruments and international treaties, which guarantee the achievement of environmental sustainability to promote international peace and security.
