Ulcers are commonly found in the inside lining of the stomach or small intestine. Stomach Ulcers are the most visible sign of peptic ulcer disease. Ulcers occur when the thick layer of mucus, which protects the stomach from the digestive juices, gets reduced. This enables the digestive acids to eat the lining tissue of the stomach.

There are typically two kinds of Ulcers found: stomach and oesophagus Ulcers. Both occur due to drastically different reasons.While oesophageal Ulcer, which is rare in nature may happen due to alcohol consumption, stomach Ulcers, on the other hand, occur due to a variety of reasons such as lifestyle factors like smoking, exposure to drugs and medications along with genetic factors.

A number of symptoms are associated with Ulcers, as it completely depends on the severity of the Ulcer. The most common symptom of Ulcer is a burning sensation or pain in the area between your chest and belly button. Another major symptom is vomiting blood. This pain intensifies if you eat or drink antacids.There are various reasons due to which Ulcers occur: A bacterium which is commonly present in the mucus lining of the stomach and the small intestine. Regular use of pain relievers. Ulcers also bring with it a variety of risk factors like those suffering with Ulcer should avoid smoking, drinking alcohol and eating spicy foods as this can contribute to irritation in the stomach lining.There are two types of treatments for curing Ulcers: surgical and non-surgical. Both come with their own set of side-effects, and one needs to take expert opinion before opting for one.

Ulcer Causes

When the inner surface of the stomach or the small intestine is eaten by acid in the digestive tract, Peptic Ulcer may occur. If the amount of mucus is decreased or the amount of acid is increased you could develop an Ulcer.

Common causes may include

1. A bacterium: Helicobacter pylori bacteria can be a cause of Ulcer by causing inflammation of the stomach's inner layer. Helicobacter pylori infection may be transmitted from person to person by close contact, such as kissing, food and water.

2. Regular use of certain pain relievers: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can inflame the lining of your stomach and small intestine. Peptic Ulcers are more common among older adults who take pain medications frequently.

3. Other medications: Some other medications such as steroids, anticoagulants, low-dose aspirin can also cause Ulcers.

Ulcer Symptoms

People suffering from Ulcers can have a really tough time dealing with it. It is an open sore on an external or internal surface of the body, causing immense pain. It is caused by a break in the skin or mucous membrane that fails to heal.

Check these symptoms:

1. A burning, gnawing pain in the upper middle part of the abdomen and is relieved only by eating or taking an antacid

2. Pain after eating caused by an Ulcer depending on where it is located. In Gastric Ulcer, belly pain increases shortly after eating while for Duodenal Ulcer, belly pain increases 2-3 hours after a meal.

3. Belly pain that increases immediately after eating

4. Frequent burping or bloating

5. Nausea, or the queasy feeling that comes before vomiting

Ulcer Prevention

Here we have listed some helpful tips to prevent ulcers:

1. Avoid certain foods such as spicy, citrus, fatty, etc. as these can be irritants for your stomach. Especially if you have noticed that certain type of food upsets your stomach, avoid it.

2. Quit smoking as smoking can be a causative factor for duodenal ulcers.

3 . Improve the quality of your life by incorporating exercise, stress-releasing activities, yoga, etc. in your everyday routine.

4. Heavy consumption of alcohol can cause ulcers. They have been shown to contribute the development of ulcers, so it's good to minimize your alcohol consumption.

5. Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may decrease your risk of irritating the lining of your stomach and thus preventing the development of Ulcers.

6. Managing stress level prevents the development of Ulcers. Practice yoga and other mind-relaxing techniques which help in the prevention of Ulcers.

7. Protect yourself from infections. Washing hands regularly and consuming foods that have been cooked thoroughly are some effective ways to prevent Ulcers.
