Hyderabad: David Warner has stepped down as Sunrisers Hyderabad captain ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 season following the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

Warner, who was sacked as Australian vice-captain, waits to learn his fate from Cricket Australia (CA).

Axed captain Steve Smith, Warner and opener Cameron Bancroft have all been sent home with CA set to announce punishments for the trio later on Wednesday for their role in the scandal that has rocked Australian cricket to its core.

Earlier, Smith had resigned as Rajasthan Royals skipper and he was replaced by Ajinkya Rahane.

Warner led Sunrisers to title triumph in the 2017 edition.

The IPL begins on April 7 and Sunrisers open their campaign against Rajasthan Royals in Hyderabad on April 9.
