KPC reducing number of expatriate employees

Posted on : Thursday 28th of June 2018

KUWAIT CITY : Kuwaiti Minister of State for Youth Affairs Mohammad Al-Jabri stressed Wednesday interest in creating an encouraging atmosphere for young people and offering them developed services.

This interest comes at the behest of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al- Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, instructing that due care be given to young people, empowering them and involving them in decision-making, Al- Jabri, who doubles as Minister of Information, said in a press statement after the 13th meeting of the Public Authority for Sports. The authority’s strategic executive plan for 2018-2019, which involves 52 youth-bearing programs, projects and activities, were endorsed during the meeting, he added.

These activities mainly aim at building technical and institutional capabilities, and developing and promoting young leaders’ participation in public affairs, the minister pointed out. Meanwhile, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) sent a circular on Thursday, June 21 to its subsidiary companies, stressing the importance of implementing Article 6 of Law No. 6/2010, reports Al-Anba daily quoting informed sources.

They explained that the circular demanded calculation of indemnity of expatriate employees by considering the salary of 15 days every year for the first five years and the salary of one month for each year from the sixth year onwards. This step is part of the rationalization policy adopted by the state on citizens who are appointed after 2014 as per which the maximum limit to their indemnity will be KD 27,000. The sources went on to explain that the indemnity of expatriate employees of KPC is currently not affected by Law No. 6/2010 but by the administrative decree and the signed contracts.

The state monitoring bodies raised objections in this regard more than once and a number of MPs criticized KPC, demanding it implement the private labor law. They revealed that the total number of expatriate employees at KPC is 3,107 including two in KPC, 2,052 in Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), 699 in Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC), 82 in Kuwait Petrochemical Industries Company, 54 in Kuwait Oil Tankers Company, 29 at Kuwait Gulf Oil Company, 143 at Kuwait Foreign Oil Exploration Company, two in Kuwait National Petroleum Company and 44 in KIPIC. The sources added that KPC is reducing the number of expatriate employees, especially administrative employees, and is instead signing contracts with companies for obtaining employees to carry out service tasks.
