Alappuzha: The coastal district of Alappuzha has been hard hit by the continuing downpour and subsequent floods. More than 2 lakh people, mostly from Kuttanad taluk, from the district are reportedly staying in relief camps.

The total number of people in relief camps of the district is 2,04,064 from 50,693 families. Of the 84,618 people from 20,576 families in the 271 relief camps in the district, 15,710 are children. Over half of the people relying on relief camps in the district are from Kuttanad. The government figures excludes a large number of people who have left for houses of relatives in safer places. The population in Kuttanad taluk alone is 1,93,007 as per the 2011 census.

The government has opened 271 relief camps and 493 food centres in the district – a total of 764. The maximum number of relief centres are in Ambalappuzha taluk – 130. Karthikapally has 76, Mavelikkara 13, Chengannur 29 and Kuttanad 13. Apart from the 463 food centres in Kuttanad, 30 centres have also been opened in Chengannur.

Last Saturday, a central team led by union minister of state for home affairs had visited the flood affected areas in Alappuzha on Saturday. The delegation held meeting with state ministers VS Sunilkumar and G Sudhakaran. The team also visited a few relief centres.

It is said the district has been hit by the worst floods in the last two decades. The floodwaters that breached bunds in the low-lying district had destroyed vast swathes of paddy fields. Government data suggest more than 7,000 acres of paddy fields were submerged.

Besides, if the large number of people who have left for houses of relatives in safer places are added, the total will soar beyond one-and-a half lakhs.
